playing
kittens and cats love to play. they train their hunting skills and keep themselves fit for this very reason. watch your cat play and join in with a piece of string or a nice little feather. you soon will find out what your cat enjoys most. each cat has its own little character. there are for example the "mouser" types which are very skilled in approaching the toy silently and suddenly pounce forward in a stunning manner and "kill" it. and there are the "birdie" types which have developed the most fantastic "flying" stunts you have ever seen.
cats get bored easily, therefore just provide 2 or three different toys at a time and swap them regularly. especially when you keep your cats entirely indoors, you should spend 15 minuntes a day to entertain your little fur balls. its more fun for your cat when you join in.
inexpensive game ideas
foil-balls
- get some tin foil, and form a little ball the size of a walnut, get a friend or partner to sit opposite of you on the other side of the room and throw the ball back and forth. your kitty will find it marvelous trying to catch the ball you pass over and over again
box palace
- get 2 or 3 shoe-boxes with lids, cut some holes into them, place them randomly on top and side of each other, place some loose newspaper sheets on top and inside. now get a thin rope and slide it underneath the "box-building" lure your cat with the movements of the string and play hide and seek until your cat catches it. start again
box race
- get a shoe-box and poke a small hole into the short end of the box, get a tough string (1m length), make a small loop, push the loop through the hole in the box, get a matchstick and place it in the loop. when you pull the string back, the match holds the loop in place.
- now place your cat in the box, and pull the box through the room, accelerate slowly when you see that your cat is comfortable with it, the race around the house can begin (my cat sadie loves this game and is the first to take a seat when the box comes out)
